DunkStat™ Launches Campaign to Make the Slam Dunk a Recognized Basketball Statistic

Schools, colleges, teams, recreation centers, historians, media organizations, athletes, and fans are invited to help document, verify, and preserve the dunk as part of basketball’s official statistical record.

WASHINGTON, DC — DunkStat™ today announced the public campaign to Make the Dunk a Statistic™, a movement calling for the slam dunk to be recorded as its own distinct basketball statistic alongside the other events already preserved in a game’s box score.

Founded by Dr. Pastor Timothy “Kick the Backboard” Stanfill, the DunkStat vision has been documented since 1999, with an online petition first created in 2009. The campaign brings together the DunkStat symbol system, the refillable Official DunkStat Scorebook, historical research, a statistical slam dunk rating framework, and a public petition at DunkStat.com.

“The dunk is one of basketball’s most visible and influential plays, but its full history is difficult to preserve when it is not consistently recorded as its own statistic,” said Stanfill. “DunkStat gives scorekeepers, programs, researchers, athletes, and fans a common language for documenting the moment.”

The campaign asks basketball organizations and community institutions to consider pilot use of DunkStat recording methods, share historical materials, educate their audiences, invite petition participation, and join a growing public record of supporters. The proposed system includes 38 abbreviations for tracking dunk attempts, makes, assists, blocks, styles, game segments, totals, and season-level distinctions.

DunkStat is also developing a pathway for dunkers to submit media for statistical review and classification. Participation in the petition, recognition wall, public history book, sponsor program, and dunker registry is consent-based and reviewed before public display.

From highlight to historical record

Basketball remembers the dunk through photographs, stories, broadcasts, and unforgettable athletes. DunkStat asks a simple but far-reaching question: if the play matters enough to define eras, why should it disappear from the official statistical story of the game?

The movement begins with a practical idea. A statistic gives a moment a durable place in history. When a dunk is recorded with consistent symbols and definitions, researchers can compare eras, scorekeepers can preserve detail, coaches and players can understand performance, and communities can document local achievements that otherwise vanish after the final buzzer.

DunkStat’s proposed language expands beyond a single total. It distinguishes made and attempted dunks, assists, blocks, styles, game periods, team totals, and season achievements. The refillable Official DunkStat Scorebook is designed to make that record usable at the scorer’s table, in a recreation center, at a school, or during an independent event.

The campaign also connects the statistic to the people who make basketball culture possible. Petition signers may choose to be recognized on the public wall and in a future commemorative book. Dunkers can register their work for review. Sponsors and contributors can support education, preservation, outreach, and pilot programs while choosing whether their names or organizations appear publicly.

The launch begins in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, with an invitation to schools, colleges, teams, leagues, recreation programs, journalists, historians, and basketball organizations everywhere. Adoption is not assumed. The campaign is an open call to examine the record, test the method, sign the petition, and help build a more complete statistical history of the dunk.
