The petition

The slam dunk is one of the most powerful, influential, recognizable, and celebrated plays in basketball. Yet in many traditional box scores, a dunk is absorbed into an ordinary two-point field goal and its identity disappears from the permanent statistical record.

Basketball separately records three-point field goals, free throws, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, and other important actions. The dunk deserves clear and consistent statistical recognition of its own.

For more than twenty years, Dr. Pastor Timothy “Kick the Backboard” Stanfill has championed the effort to make the dunk a statistic. Through DunkStat™, DunkStat.com, DunkStatBook.com, and the Official DunkStat Scorebook, a framework has been advanced to identify, record, verify, publish, and preserve dunking accomplishments.

The preserved official play-by-play records two dunks by UDC No. 33, Tim Stanfill, during the second half—one at 5:50 and another at 4:43.

This is the foundational college record in the DunkStat™ archive: the dunk was identified by name and entered into the statistical record instead of being left only to memory.

Dr. E. B. Henderson

UDC recognizes Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson—an alumnus of Miner Normal School, a UDC predecessor institution—for introducing organized basketball to Black communities in Washington, D.C. The university's sports complex now bears his name.

The preserved UDC–Kentucky State play-by-play sheet records two second-half dunks by UDC No. 33. That surviving record shows that the dunk could be identified as its own event—not merely remembered as part of a field goal.

Stanfill identifies his UDC experience as a formative step toward DunkStat™: a complete language for recording made dunks, attempts, assists, styles, totals, percentages, and historical leaders.

Why this matters to the petition

UDC's connection demonstrates both legacy and possibility. Henderson helped open the game to generations of Black players. Stanfill's campaign asks today's basketball institutions to preserve what those players accomplish above the rim.

Source note: Henderson's relationship to UDC and his basketball legacy are documented by the university.
